Dress codes in Malaysia have always been a point of disagreement between various groups of Malaysians. It is general knowledge that one should dress conservatively, or at least decently, when out in public spaces.

On Christmas day last month, a group of foreign tourists in Pulau Besar, Malacca, attracted the attention of netizens as well as the Malacca Islamic Religion Department (JAIM) for wearing only bikinis.

A video of the tourists having a picnic while bathing at the island went viral for their eye-catching attire.

“This is the first and the last, don’t repeat it (wearing eye-catching clothes) and we will not compromise,” said Director of JAIM, Datuk Che Sukri Che Mat in response to the viral video.

It is against Islam

He described the action of the tourists as tarnishing the image and sanctity of Pulau Besar.

As such, Che Sukri said that JAIM takes the issue seriously and will hold a special meeting next Tuesday with several related agencies to discuss the issue of non-Muslim tourists who engage in activities that go against the teachings and culture of the Muslim community in Malacca.

“The meeting will discuss the best course of action that can be taken against foreign tourists who damage the image and sanctity of Pulau Besar, which has been long respected for it’s historical significance dating back to the beginning of Islamic civilization.”

Moving forward

Commenting further, Che Sukri said that JAIM cannot take action against the tourists because Section 71 of the Melaka State Syariah Offenses Enactment 1991 only applies to Muslims.

Hence, JAIM will take proactive steps such as suggesting MBMB to install more sign boards reminding tourists to always dress modestly and not to engage in activities contrary to Islamic teachings on the island.

“Such clothes (nowadays) are only appropriate in the bedroom and not shown to the community on Pulau Besar. Don’t take this lightly,” he said.

What do you think? Should tourists be allowed to wear bikinis on any beach in Malaysia?
