The Governor of Jakarta, Pramono Anung Wibowo, recently lauded the Indonesian capital’s public transportation system, which he says is among the best in the world.

Pramono was quoted by the Indonesia-based portal Detik as saying that globally, Jakarta has the 17th best public transport, while regionally, the city is ranked second, only behind Singapore in Southeast Asia.

The Jakarta Governor cited the latest survey by the global magazine Time Out as a reference for the achievement, which surveyed more than 18,500 respondents from 50 cities worldwide.

Pramono asserted,

“Out of 50 cities, over 18,000 respondents surveyed, Jakarta is now in 17th place. In Southeast Asia, we only lost to Singapore. We’re better than Kuala Lumpur, Manila, even Bangkok,”

He added that the achievement shows that the Indonesian capital city is increasingly being recognised globally for its provision of public facilities.

The Jakarta Governor also hoped that the city would improve in the rankings and not just settle for 17th best.

According to the Time Out survey referenced by Pramono, here are the 19 cities globally with the best public transport:

The global magazine elaborated that over 18,500 city-dwellers in over 50 countries participated in the survey to rate their city’s public transport.

Moreover, the ranking represents the cities with the highest percentage of locals that would describe the public transport network – including buses, trains, trams and everything in between – as either ‘good’ or ‘amazing’.
