Swiping on our smartphones is an addictive habit, but a nurse doing that while attending to a patient is just unacceptable!
Just recently (May 2018), a nurse from Hospital Sultanah Aminah (HSA) in Johor Bahru went viral on Facebook after she was caught playing with her smartphone while providing breathing assistance to a patient.
The 27-second video was believed to have been recorded by another patient in the same ward who then uploaded it on the social media platform. Here’s the full video:
Director of Johor State Health Department, Dr Selahuddeen Abdul Aziz said the department takes this issue seriously and will conduct a joint investigation with the hospital on this case.
According to the director, the authorities had already met up with the patient’s family to get more details about the incident and to provide an explanation to them at the same time. Investigations have already been carried out by a committee comprising experts.

He added that nurses are required to follow the patient-handling procedure when attending to patients who require breathing assistance before being sent into ICU.
“If there’s elements of negligence in this case, disciplinary action will be taken against the staff,” he said.
Besides that, the director also stressed that taking pictures or videos in any of the Health Ministry facilities is illegal. That’s because the action violates the patient’s privacy and it’s unethical too. Lastly, he advised members of the public to inform the management of the hospital should they spot any wrongdoing by the staff.
