The Immigration Department of Malaysia (JIM) detained several foreigners without valid travel documentation in Johor on Sunday (25 February), including a Singaporean who had been overstaying in our country for more than a decade.
In a statement by JIM Johor yesterday, 5 individuals were detained during the operation jointly conducted with Johor Bahru City Council (MBJB) and Pasir Gudang City Council (MBPG) at around 9.30am on Sunday.
The Singaporean man overstayed in Malaysia for 13 years
The most notable foreigner detained has got to be the Singaporean national who had been staying in Malaysia illegally for a whopping 13 years.
According to the statement, the Singaporean, a 34-year-old man, had broken our immigration laws by overstaying in Malaysia since 2011.
The Singaporean was detained in Jalan Wadihana, Johor Bahru after JIM Johor took a follow-up action to a complaint lodged by the public regarding the building of an illegal structure on a public reserve land there.
The department also detained a Bangladeshi man at the same location for violating the conditions of his work permit pass.
3 other foreigners were detained in Pasir Gudang
The statement further revealed that during the operation in Pasir Gudang, 3 other foreigners were detained for immigration-related offences.
These include 2 Indonesian nationals and a Pakistani national, all of whom didn’t have a valid pass or permit to be in Malaysia.
The offences and subsequent actions taken against the offenders
All 5 individuals detained are found to have committed offences as per:
- Section 6(1)(c) of the Immigration Act 1959/63 for not having a valid pass or permit to stay in Malaysia
- Section 15(1)(c) of the Immigration Act 1959/63 for overstaying
- Regulation 39(b) of the Immigration Regulations 1963 for violating the set conditions of a pass
Moreover, 1 notice to appear at the JIM office was issued to one of the offenders to assist in the investigation. All of the detainees are also currently placed at the Setia Tropika Immigration Depot for further action.
