Previously, we shared about the Road Transport Department’s (JPJ) Ops Saman Tertunggak Kenderaan Pendaftaran Asing Thailand (Ops Tunggak), a special operation which managed to collect RM425,104 from 332 outstanding summonses issued to Thai-registered vehicles.

Some 3 months later, JPJ has given an update about Ops Tunggak, revealing that since the launch of the operation in September last year, foreign drivers, especially from Thailand, have paid a total of RM2.5 million in compound fines.

JPJ Enforcement Senior Director Muhammad Kifli Ma Hassan was quoted by BERNAMA as saying that most of the fines were paid in states bordering Thailand, namely Perlis, Kedah, Kelantan and Perak.

He added that many of the fines involved van drivers transporting workers from Thailand to Malaysia, especially to Klang Valley.

Muhammad Kifli further revealed that the highest single fine paid throughout Ops Tunggak was by a Thai van driver who settled a whopping RM65,000 in outstanding summonses.

The driver’s van was seized by JPJ during the operation, prompting the Thai national to settle the outstanding summonses in one go.

The JPJ Enforcement Senior Director asserted that once the fines were paid, JPJ released the van.
