The Road Transport Department (JPJ) has introduced the JPJePlate, a special number plate designed for zero-emission motor vehicles (ZEV) including electric vehicles (EV).
According to a report by Malaysia Gazette, the Minister of Transport, Anthony Loke Siew Fook shared that the introduction of JPJePlate is a 2-pronged strategy for additional incentives to encourage the use of ZEVs and EVs to continue digitisation measures.
“The implementation of JPJePlate is the government’s efforts to multiply efforts in expanding digitization, improving road safety and creating a new evolution in the smart vehicle identification system (or Vehicle Identification System – VIS),”
“This initiative will be implemented on new ZEV vehicles including new electric vehicles (EVs),” he said.
JPJePlate is accompanied by new standards for road safety and efficiency with several key benefits, including:
- Enhanced visibility: With retro-reflective features, JPJePlate improves visibility at night, helping to reduce accidents and ensure better driving safety while facilitating enforcement actions.
- Security features: This number plate is equipped with an anti-cloning hologram to minimize the risk of theft and fraud. JPJePlate also allows electric vehicles to be identified easily so that the correct safety protocol is used during an emergency.
- Smart technology and enforcement: With the integration of the Intelligent Transport System (ITS) through RFID technology, JPJePlate contributes to a more connected and intelligent transport network.
Additionally, JPJePlate comes with a white plate board with the number plate written in white, in addition to having a green stripe that symbolizes the code for electric vehicles and displays the Malaysian flag.
It is not mandatory for existing ZEVs to have the JPJePlate, though interested owners can purchase a JPJePlate set for RM98 as early as November.
“This price includes the front plate, back plate, Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) mirror sticker and standard delivery. The focus now is to ensure that the implementation of JPJePlate for new ZEVs goes smoothly. The Ministry of Transport welcomes feedback from the public regarding this initiative,” he added.
Should the feedback be good, the authorities will consider implementing JPJePlate for other vehicles as well.
