On Monday (22 September), Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim announced the BUDI MADANI RON95 (BUDI95) targeted subsidy programme, which allows Malaysians to enjoy RON95 at RM1.99 per litre.

Given that one of the requirements for the programme includes having a valid driving license, Malaysians have reportedly flocked to renew their expired licenses so that they won’t miss out on the cheaper RON95 price.

This is confirmed by Road Transport Department (JPJ) director-general Datuk Aedy Fadly Ramli, who was quoted by BERNAMA as saying that renewals of Competent Driving License (CDL) have increased by a whopping 53% nationwide since the announcement on Monday.

Aedy Fadly elaborated that before Monday, average daily CDL renewals stood at around 17,000 transactions. The figure has surged to 26,000 daily after Anwar’s announcement.

“According to our records, 23,125 transactions were recorded on 23 September, rising slightly by 0.15 per cent to 23,160 on 24 September. The number then jumped sharply by 45.6% to 33,714 transactions on 25 September,” the JPJ director-general told reporters in Ayer Molek, Melaka, today.

Datuk Aedy Fadly Ramli,

To make the process smoother, JPJ is opening its counters handling driving license matters and traffic summons blacklist checks on weekends until 26 October nationwide.

This initiative saw states that observe weekends on Fridays (Kedah, Kelantan, Terengganu) recording a higher number of license renewal transactions on Friday (26 September) compared to other states.

Aedy Fadly said the trend indicated that more licence holders were taking proactive steps to renew their licences to benefit from BUDI95, while also reflecting growing awareness of the legal requirement to hold a valid licence under the Road Transport Act 1987.

BUDI95 will be available to police and military personnel starting today, and Rahmah Cash Contribution (STR) recipients will receive it from 28 September (Sunday). For the rest of eligible Malaysians, they can enjoy RON95 at RM1.99 per litre starting on Tuesday (30 September).
