The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) in a press release today announced that it has gotten permission from the Attorney-General Chamber (AGC) to issue compounds of RM10,000 each to comedian Harith Iskander and social media personality Cecilia Yap.

The compounds were issued to both individuals because they uploaded content and offensive comments involving the religion of Islam on 18 January 2025.

MCMC further elaborated that the action was taken against Harith Iskander and Cecelia Yap under Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998.

Furthermore, Meta, after receiving an application from MCMC, had taken down both content as they were against Facebook’s community guidelines.

Besides that, the commission had also applied for Facebook to close the accounts belonging to both individuals, which is currently under consideration by Meta.

The investigation paper on three local DJs allegedly mocking Hinduism will be sent to the Deputy Public Prosecutor tomorrow

In the statement, MCMC also provided an update regarding another controversial issue involving three local radio station DJs who allegedly mocked Hinduism.

The commission asserted that an investigation paper will be forwarded to the Deputy Public Prosecutor (DPP) tomorrow (6 March).
