Prior to the 15th General Election, there were allegations thrown about that certain political parties and coalitions were essentially “paying” for votes, either by directly giving cash in hand, or paying popular influencers to get their followers to vote for them.

However, this practice of handing out money to voters have been heavily criticised. Recently, Kedah Perikatan Nasional (PN) chief Datuk Seri Muhammad Sanusi Md Nor allegedly described voters wanting money in return to vote as being stupid and an embarrassment.

In a campaign video posted on TikTok which was a clip of his speech, he said that some voters had resorted to sulking online when they didn’t get the allowance for voting.

The video clip shows Sanusi making a campaign speech in support of PN candidate Datuk Azman Nasrudin in the Padang Serai parliamentary election to be held on December 7.

He then contrasted this with Pakatan Harapan (PH) supporters, some of which were willing to travel home to vote, from as far as Australia and the Americas.

“They knew the importance in assuming control of this land. Here you are asking for RM50. You are stupid.”

Sanusi who is the Kedah Menteri Besar cited an instance where one whole family from Australia spent RM40,000 to return to vote for Pakatan Harapan and did not even ask for a single sen in return.

“Your vote is important. Don’t be calculative over RM50 to RM200 worth of petrol money. Those fighting us are coming back from Taiwan, China, Singapore, United States, Australia and voted for Pakatan Harapan. They didn’t ask for a single sen,” he added.
