Recently, the number of flood victims in Malaysia has exceeded 77,000, with Kelantan recording the highest number. Additionally, 30 areas in the state are still without electricity.

In an interview, Kelantan’s Tourism, Culture, Arts, and Heritage Committee Chairman, Datuk Kamarudin Md Noor, mentioned that Kelantan is thinking about turning the flood situation into a tourist attraction.

Kelantan has become ‘quiet’

Kamarudin mentioned in the interview that they are looking to promote the monsoon season as a time to attract tourists to visit the state.

In this effort, he hopes that the attempt will bring in more visitors during the monsoon season, as Kelantan has become quieter with fewer tourists.

“But there needs to be an event. So, what we’ve planned for this event is to suggest surfing (luncur ombak) in mid-December, along with traditional food.”

Promoting traditional food

According to reports, since the floods have affected many, including business owners, the effort to introduce traditional food is hoped to help these businesses find income.

This includes hotel operators who can offer packages during this time.

As an experiment, they plan to introduce the surfing event in Pantai Kemayan mid-next month.
