Kelantan named the second safest state after Sabah

Kelantan had the second-lowest crime index with a score of 96 per 100,000 population, down from 108 the year before.

It was ranked the second safest state in Malaysia after Sabah, which scored 95, with Terengganu coming in third at 100.

Meanwhile, 5 states recorded crime index rates higher than the national average of 149:

  • Federal Territory of Kuala Lumpur (221)
  • Selangor (196)
  • Kedah (193)
  • Penang (193)
  • Negeri Sembilan (159)

Chief Statistician Dato’ Sri Dr. Mohd Uzir Mahidin pointed out that when developing an area, it’s important to focus on safety and crime data since they play a big role in showing how well crime is being tackled in the country.

The government has taken steps to address rising crime

BERNAMA also reported that Deputy MB Datuk Dr Mohamed Fadzli Hassan said the state government has taken extra steps to deal with social issues and rising crime, like closing gambling outlets and tightening rules on alcohol.

This was in response to Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail, who earlier said Kelantan, Terengganu, Perlis, and Kedah had the highest rates of drug abuse.
