KPWKM: 1,929 Domestic Violence Complaints Lodged Since The Start Of MCO

The impact of a pandemic and a Movement Control Order.

Since the implementation of the Movement Control Order (MCO) earlier on 18 March this year, the Ministry of Women, Family and Community Development (KPWKM) has received a total of 1,929 complaints on domestic violence.

According to Datuk Seri Rina Mohd Harun, the minister of Women, Family and Community Development, Selangor recorded the highest number of cases, at 375, followed by Johor with 264 cases.

She added that complaints were received through the Talian Kasih at 15999. The majority of the complaints involved physical and/or emotional and sexual violence, according to BERNAMA.

On 8 November 2020, she told the media, “That is why in Budget 2021, we provide a Local Social Support Centre to provide protection to victims of domestic violence, with the pilot projects to be carried out in Johor and Selangor.”.

As announced on 6 November 2020, the government has allocated RM21 million for local social support centres to protect women in domestic abuse households.

It will be launched in collaboration with the non-governmental organizations (NGOs) to provide social protection and moral support for women facing domestic violence, abuse and divorce.
