Just a year ago, Lee Jia Rong was grappling with disappointment after failing to clinch gold at the Malaysia Games (Sukma) in Sarawak.

Fast forward to the 17th World Wushu Championships in Brasilia, Brazil, and the national athlete has stunned the global stage by bagging her fourth gold medal in a dazzling comeback.

On the fourth day of the tournament, Jia Rong delivered a commanding performance in the Daoshu event, scoring 9.776 points to claim her first individual gold of the championship. Though she tied in score with Hong Kong’s Michelle Yeung, Jia Rong’s routine edged ahead due to its higher difficulty level. Japan’s Kana Ikeuchi secured bronze with 9.723 points.

This victory adds to the bronze Jia Rong earned earlier in the Gunshu event, further solidifying her status as one of Malaysia’s breakout stars in international wushu.

Her rise is nothing short of remarkable. Initially left out of the national squad, Jia Rong was only called up after senior athlete Loh Ying Ting, herself a former silver medallist, was sidelined by injury. At the time, Jia Rong wasn’t even a full member of the Podium Programme, Malaysia’s elite athlete development initiative.

“We begged for her to be given a chance,” said Wushu Federation of Malaysia (WFM) secretary-general Datuk Yong Kheng Chien.

“She had just crossed the age limit for the backup squad and technically had nowhere to go. But she didn’t give up. She kept training, and now she’s upstaged her seniors on the world stage.”

The National Sports Council eventually placed her on a one-year probation, a gamble that has paid off in gold.

“Last year was a very down period for her, but perseverance paid off,” Yong added. “She’s proven her worth.”

Congratulations to Lee Jia Rong!
