More and more local brands have come up with innovative ways to advertise and incorporate their services and products.

Recently, a video by renowned airline Malaysia Airlines went viral and drew mixed reactions from Malaysians.

The video titled ‘Satu, Dua, Tiga, JOM!’ is about the airline’s newest in-flight safety video, featuring many celebrities and national icons.

It was produced by ENFINITI Group, which does world-class experiences across entertainment, tourism and education and was directed by Tiara Jacquelina in collaboration with Malaysia Airlines.

The entertaining 7-minute-video features national icons such as humanitarian Tan Sri Dr Jemilah Mahmood, Olympian gymnast Farah Ann Hadi, fashion designer Syomir Izwa Gupta, and astrophysicist Tan Sri Mazlan Othman, amongst many others.

In an interview with The Star, Tiara said, “It’s a dream cast. We have a cross-section of all sorts of Malaysians. I always try to give ourselves reasons to celebrate our diversity.”

Tiara, who co-directed the video with Datuk Yusry Abdul Halim, said that she was approached by Malaysia Airlines last year when travel restrictions were still in place.

“I immediately knew I wanted it to be a musical.”

“This is not a normal in-flight safety video. I want them to be entertained and informed at the same time. When it’s fun, you watch it again and again. Better still, if they sing along… and memorise the safety instructions when they fly,” she added.

According to MAS, passengers travelling with them will be able to watch a shorter version of the video onboard flights beginning this August 2022.

“I can’t wait to fly with MAS!”

The video has gone viral where on YouTube, it currently sits with over 5,881 views, whilst on Malaysia Airlines’ Facebook page, it has amassed over 56,000 views.

Malaysians loved the concept and praised the creative take on in-flight videos, which are often standard and boring by default.

“The best airline safety video. Awesome Malaysia Airlines. Finally (there is) an innovative safety video from Malaysia,” said a user.

“I would feel welcomed after watching this! Imagine Malaysians coming back from overseas watching this on board, and they will feel even more excited to come back home!

Another netizen said that the video is precisely what is needed to promote cheer as we are finally coming out of the doom and gloom that was the pandemic.

I think it reflects the fun side of Malaysians, many of whom can still smile and laugh in the face of adversity… I think this will get passengers up and dancing in the aisle if you don’t watch out,” added the user.

How is this about safety?!

However, it seems that not everyone was impressed with the performance. Some pointed out that in-flight safety videos should be focused on educating people instead of being entertaining.

“I’m sorry, it’s a little over the top and distracting. It was (everything) but safety and over 7 minutes long… this isn’t your average briefing. It was just noisy and manic,” commented a netizen.

“It took you 1 minute and 20 seconds for you to inform your passengers on the very first safety instruction. You are giving them an impression that NOT every second counts during an inflight emergency,” said another.
