The Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) has implemented a trial run of its new Vehicle Access Management System (VAMS) at Level 5 (Departure drop-off) as well as Level 3 (Arrival pick-up) at Terminal 1, starting yesterday (September 1).

According to a press statement by Malaysia Airports, the VAMS trial period will also be implemented at Terminal 2 starting Monday (September 15), and both trial runs will end on November 30, 2025.

Drivers only have a 10-minute grace period for dropping off and picking up passengers at KLIA

The system will include timed entry and exits through barrier gates, designed to reduce congestion caused by unauthorised and extended stops at the kerbside.

VAMS will grant vehicles a 10-minute grace period for drop-offs and pick-ups, with the system monitoring vehicles that remain beyond this time. No penalty fees will be imposed during the trial period as the focus will be on observing traffic patterns, driver behaviours and the overall system performance.

This will then determine the optimal grace period and penalty fee structure for full implementation. Following the trial period, penalty fees will be introduced to discourage extended waiting at the kerbside.

The fine for taking longer than 10 minutes to drop off and pick up is reportedly up to RM100

While the amount of fine was not mentioned, the penalty is believed to be a maximum of RM100 once implemented. This is based on signage that has been spotted at KLIA Terminal 1, as shared by the My News Facebook page.

“Airports worldwide are adopting smarter kerbside management to reduce congestion and elevate the passenger experience. At KLIA, our goal is to create a safer, more efficient and passenger-friendly airport environment,”

“The terminal is often travellers’ first and final impression of Malaysia, and we want that to reflect our hospitality and efficiency, particularly as we prepare for Visit Malaysia Year 2026,” shared Datuk Mohd Izani Ghani, the  Managing Director of Malaysia Airports.
