Looks like we’ve got a lot to be proud of as we celebrate our 60th year of independence!
According to Vision of Humanity’s 2017 Global Peace Index (GPI), Malaysia was ranked as the 29th most peaceful country out of a total of 163 countries, beating countries like the United Kingdom, Italy, France, the United States, Poland, and South Korea.
Based on their report, the GPI found that overall, the world became slightly more peaceful in the past year. However, we have become less peaceful over the past decade.
Malaysia is one of the 93 countries that became more peaceful this year, while 68 other countries became less peaceful.
Iceland came out as the most peaceful country, maintaining its top position since 2008, followed by New Zealand, and Portugal. Syria ranked at the bottom of the list, being the least peaceful country, followed by Afghanistan and Iraq.
Meanwhile, Europe is considered the most peaceful region on a global scale, with eight out of 10 most peaceful countries in the list coming from that region.
Our placing in the GPI has improved since last year, where we just made it to number 30 on the list. Well, that’s good progress at least, even though it’s just one spot higher!
It looks like many of us have taken our country’s relatively peaceful atmosphere for granted. This Merdeka, let’s make it a point to reflect on all the simple, everyday things we take for granted that other countries may not have. It’s the least we can do, after all!
