When people bring up the notion of ‘rumah kampung‘, the image of a beautifully aged wooden home built upon stilts immediately comes to mind, rekindling impressions of simpler times in our country. And while times have changed, there is still plenty of appeal left to the beauty of traditional Malay architecture that we can appreciate even to this day.
And for one homeowner in Kelantan, an appreciation for traditional Malay architecture doesn’t mean that it would have to come at the cost of modern luxuries. As shared by netizen @faezmaleksss, a local construction company here has completed what they have termed as a ‘Traditional Modern’ interpretation of the familiar ‘rumah kampung‘ by fusing elements from the past and the present together in a single edifice.
The home, which is owned by Datin Rodiah Binti Ismail, is said to have cost over RM502,000 to construct and furnish, and takes up a total area of 2,175 square-feet. Designed and built by Red Diamond House, this unique ‘rumah kampung‘ retains some traditional features, such as the high stilts, but trades wooden walls and floors for glossy tiles, brick, and glass.
It even features a grand entrance with a chandelier hanging from its open front porch! How glamorous!
Robust and spacious, the home is appointed with a number of luxuries that are expected of modern homes today, such as air-conditioning, recessed lighting fixtures, a glossy set of kitchen cabinets and even a bathtub. Most apartments don’t even have that in KL.
While some of the interior design appointments may be questionable for some, the overall fit and furnish of the home looks to be done very well.
The Tweet has since gone viral across social media, garnering over 18,400 retweets.
What do you guys think of this interpretation of the traditional Malaysian rumah kampung?
