Recently, Maybank came under fire by public members for its new Maybank debit card fiasco. Many consumers’ Maybank cards were declined at payment counter, but they were still charged for the transaction and have their money deducted from their bank account.
A Malaysian female student took it to social media after she faced the similar issue. According to her post shared in Kuantan Komuniti, she went to a shopping mall to buy her school supplies before the school reopens.
After grabbing all the necessary items which totalled up to RM 149.40, she proceeded to make the payment at the counter. She made the payment with her Maybank card but was declined 3 times at the counter.
The cashier rubbed the chip on the card with an eraser and tried again for the fourth time because the customer didn’t have sufficient cash with her. It was declined as well.
The cashier then said that all the new bank cards used by customers were declined by the machine. That day alone, 6 customers’ card were declined.
The student clarified with the cashier because she’s worried that her money might be deducted from her bank account for the failed transactions. The cashier said no money was deducted because the card machine didn’t issue any receipt.
Later on, the student checked her banking history through ‘Maybank2u’ application. True enough, all the transactions were successful and money had been deducted from her account. Since she swiped 4 times, 4 times of RM 149.40 were deducted. Nooo wayyy…
She immediately called Maybank for clarification. According to the Maybank operator, the transaction was actually successful but ‘floating’, meaning the money has been deducted from the account but did not reach any account. This was why the machine showed ‘Declined’.
To get her money back, she had to fill up a form and email it to Maybank. In 30 days, she would get the refund.
“One month? That’s too long! Thank god I still have cash. What if that’s all the money I have?” she said.
Apparently she was not the only victim. A quick browse through Maybank’s Facebook page revealed that many customers have experienced similar problems for the past week.
“Just now I try to make payment to Japan airline but unsuccessful. After that I checked my account, RM 2799 was deducted.” commented a netizen.
“Maybank gives me problem. I swiped my debit card at UO Angsana, it was declined but money has been deducted. I switched to CIMB card and there was no problem. And all the customer service officers did not pick up the phone!” commented another netizen.
However, Maybank did try their best to resolve the problems as soon as they received customers’ complaints.
Guys, if you’re using Maybank cards, might wanna take note. Won’t wanna go broke swiping cards multiple times yeah?
