A man with two small kids sitting at the back of a car under the hot sun was spotted in Bandar Perda, Penang recently. He was seen holding a placard and at first glance, you would’ve thought that he was asking for donations. However, a closer look reveals the message on the card to be, “I want to donate my kidney, blood type B,” followed by the man’s contact number.

This photo was shared on a Facebook page and gained netizens’ attention as they were rather puzzled by his message. If he really wanted to donate his kidney, he could just have registered with organ donation and the hospital would inform if they had a suitable recipient.

According to mStar, the man, known only as Saiful, told the daily that he actually wants to sell his kidney as he is facing financial difficulties. He told the daily that he wrote “donate” as he was afraid that people would think he was selling his kids so when anyone approached him, he would explain the truth to them.

The 31-year-old man said that he had already registered as an organ donor in 2012, but he has no choice but to sell his kidney as he is facing a huge amount of debt. He said that he had borrowed RM3,000 from loan sharks two months ago as he wanted to open a fried chicken stall near his home, where he lives with his wife and kids.

“Now, I have to pay RM36 every day to the loan sharks and my stall’s profit is only RM50 to RM60 per day. After paying the loan sharks, I do not have enough money left over to pay my bills, rental and support my family,” he added. He has two sons, aged two and three years old respectively, and the car he is currently using belongs to his father-in-law.

He had gotten some financial help from government agencies before but had lost his MyKad for the third time and could not get further aid. Saiful said that he could not afford to pay the RM1,000 fine to replace his MyKad and although he has six siblings, he said that he would rather sell his kidney than be shamed for asking for financial help from his family and in-laws.

When asked what price he was willing to sell his kidney for, he said that he didn’t mind, as long as the amount could cover his debts. However, he said that if his financial problems were settled, he would prefer to donate his organs, as he originally planned to.
