Malaysia is full of exceptional young adults who strive to bring good changes to the world.

One of them is Mogesh Sababathy, a 23-year-old who has been named among the 20 finalists for the 2021 Commonwealth Youth Awards for his project, which is focused on the sustainable development goal (SGD) of ‘Life Below Water’.

As showcased on the Commonwealth website, Mogesh co-founded ‘Project Ocean Hope’, a youth-led group that aims to raise the visibility of ocean issues and environmental conservation through campaigns and youth leadership training.

“The group had also run educational community projects to reduce littering and unsustainable fishing practices, and an ocean literacy webinar series on waste management, reaching over 10,000 individuals across 15 countries,” they shared.

The award recognises outstanding young people across the Commonwealth, whose projects transform lives in their communities and helping to achieve the SDG.

As according to Bernama, Mogesh shared that this prestigious award isn’t about him but all Malaysian youths who are passionate and have been working hard for the sustainability of the environment.

“I would like to thank The Commonwealth for recognising our efforts. I would also like to thank all the lecturers and staff of Universiti Malaysia Terengganu (UMT) for the continuous support and encouragement and for providing us the platform to develop and making Project Ocean Hope a reality,” he said.

All 20 finalists will each receive a trophy, certificate and £1,000 (RM5,553.12) to expand the impact of their projects. Each regional winner will receive £3,000 (RM16,659.36) and the overall pan-Commonwealth winner will take home a total of £5,000 (RM27,765.61).

Congratulations, Mogesh, we’re rooting for you!
