Fugitive Nicky Liow faced charges involving money laundering amounting to more than RM36 million under 26 charges at the Sessions Court in Shah Alam yesterday (12 April).
Based on a report by Utusan Malaysia, the accused pleaded not guilty when the charges were read out to him by a Mandarin intepreter before Judge Helina Sulaiman.
The judge had then set a bail of RM1 million with 2 sureties alone with other conditions, namely to report to the Bukit Aman Commercial Crime Investigation Department and to hand over his passport to the court.
Liow had previously surrendered himself to the police after a year on the run.
A report by Berita Harian also shared that Liow has since paid the bail amount in 2 installments.
Malaysians have since expressed their dissatisfaction on how the local justice system is treating Liow in a Twitter thread by FreeMalaysian, especially considering he had been allowed bail despite him previously being on the run.
They also shared their theories as to why Liow had suddenly surrendered himself.
