The Philippines may soon introduce a new visa category that would allow foreign visitors, including from Malaysia, to stay for up to 2 years while ‘working from home’ in the country.

Called the digital nomad visa, a bill for the new visa category was recently filed by Senator Joel Villanueva under Senate Bill No. 2991 in the country, which he lauded as being able to boost tourism in the Philippines.

In a press release, Villanueva said that the new visa would allow visitors to stay in the country for a longer period while working for a foreign-based employer or business.

He added,

“From our pristine beaches, green mountain ranges to our city’s vibrant urban hubs, each location in the Philippines provides unique advantages for remote workers,”

The proposed new visa seeks to provide a new visa category for digital nomads that is valid for one year and renewable for another year.

Moreover, the bill asserted that applicants for the proposed digital nomad visa must fulfil certain criteria, including:

  • Provide proof of sufficient income generated outside the country
  • Hold valid health insurance within the validity of the visa
  • Have no criminal record in his/her home country
  • Will not be a threat to the Philippines

Villanueva further elaborated that while those under this proposed visa are not allowed to take local jobs, they can share their knowledge and best practices with the local communities.

He added,

“Digital nomads spend money and, therefore, would benefit the economy. The Philippines is a promising destination for those who embrace a nomadic lifestyle and leverage technology to work remotely from outside their home country…

“The digital nomad visa program should be more than a bureaucratic procedure. It should foster an environment that will genuinely welcome visitors to our shores and allow ‘workationing’ possible for an extended period,”

For reference, currently, Malaysians can visit the Philippines for up to 30 days without a visa for tourism or social purposes.
