Time Out London recently published a video featuring multiple clips of diners attempting to burst their xiaolong bao aka soup dumpling.
The patrons burst the dumpling and can be seen letting the soup spill out all over the bowl.
Any Malaysian would seriously cringe at this. It, by no doubt, has aggravated the Malaysian foodies.
The horror!!
What initially intended to be a promotional video backfired immensely and the unconventional way of eating the dumplings have garnered severe criticism by foodies all around the globe.
The video shows the diners violently poking the fragile skin of the dumpling and intentionally splitting and breaking the skin apart, allowing the heavenly steaming soup to leak out from the dumpling.
The video shows several dumplings being broken apart by the diners with chopstick, even adding the caption ”They’re super dribbly and also very satisfying to watch.” At this point it is pretty certain most Malaysians are either crying their eyes out or silently cursing the diners for wasting that piece of goodness.
Many netizens all over the world couldn’t take the horror and have publicly condemned TimeOut London for showing the incorrect way of enjoying the delicate soup dumpling. They were also heavily criticized for choosing the worst possible caption available.
”Love popping spots AND eating dumplings? Combine the two with exploding soup dumplings at Dumplings Legend”

“You’re not supposed to pop the dumplings *Asians screaming everywhere*”
“This video is giving me anxiety because you are definitely NOT supposed to squeeze the soup out of them or “explode” them as you crudely put it.”
“Watching you waste all that soup is akin to someone getting battered fish and chips and peeling the batter off, while remarking, “love peeling dead skin to reveal the smooth new skin within?””
In response to all the criticism, TimeOut London had since issued an apology post and admitted the error of their way on their website, while stating that :
”We burst soup dumplings to show people in our video the delicious soup that was inside them, so they could enjoy the visual treat of the broth that is tasted but not seen.”
