Life in the city has its pros and cons. On one hand, it offers great infrastructure which makes our lives a lot more convenient with public transport, highways, universities, restaurants, shopping malls and more. The city is also full of attractions and job opportunities that many who live in the suburbs would flock to.

On the other hand, you will also need to deal with things like smaller living spaces, a dense population and pollution. Here are some of the little struggles city-dwelling Malaysians have to deal with, and why they still prefer to live here:

1. There is a lot of competition when it comes to work but also more job opportunities

Due to the high number of people living and working in the city, there is a lot of competition when it comes to one’s career. However, there are many opportunities for jobs in the city too when compared to places outside of a city.

“Getting and keeping a job here is tough but then again if I were living back in my kampung, I probably will have no job at all. Here I have options and more opportunities regardless of whether or not I’m looking for a parttime or fulltime job.” – Daniel, 33

2. Properties are quite small and expensive but there are many conveniences around

Residential buildng KL

The sizes of apartments and houses in cities are smaller compared to houses outside the city. On the plus side, living in the city means an individual would have easy access to all sorts of conveniences like shopping malls, universities, hospitals, and so much more.

“My husband and I are thinking of getting kids soon and we’re going to need a bigger space, but we also want to live close to schools and supermarkets so the city is still the best option.” – Winnie, 28

3. There is always heavy traffic in the city but there’s also great infrastructure

lrt train

Traffic congestion is common in the city, especially during rush hour. However, the city is equipped with infrastructures such as trains and highways so you don’t have to worry about getting stuck in traffic.

“I drive my car to work every day and the traffic can be a nightmare, but I like having the option to take the LRT to work on some days when I don’t feel like sitting in traffic.” – Benjamin, 30

4. It can get pretty noisy but there’s always something to do

The city is always buzzing with activity and if you’re living in an area with a ‘pasar malam‘ or other shops nearby, you will definitely have to live with the noise. But with that said, there’s always something to do and you’ll rarely get bored in the city.

“I live near some shop lots and one of them is an event space. The noise can be pretty annoying at times but I’m also grateful that there’s always something to do or see nearby when I need it.” – Aziq, 24

5. The city is always busy but at least there are nice parks in the city for people to reconnect with nature

klcc park

The city might be noisy and cramped but there are also many public parks that dot Kuala Lumpur. One of the most popular parks here is the KLCC Park which is visited by hundreds of people each day. However, the park can get pretty crowded and traffic is also very heavy in the area which makes getting there quite a hassle.

“I love going for walks at the KLCC park but there are way too many people there especially on weekends. On top of that, parking is expensive and traffic in that area is pretty bad.” – Hana, 28

Don’t get us wrong! Living in the city does have its perks but there are also a lot of issues surrounding safety, traffic, overcrowding and space that affects our overall quality of life.

But what if we told you that there is an option to live in the city, away from the city? A place where you can enjoy all that the suburbs have to offer while still living close to the city.
