According to the Immigration Department’s Director-General, Datuk Seri Mustafar Ali, the topic of imposing this fine is still under discussion. However, Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi basically agreed to this move.

Prior to this, there were no such punishments for losing your passports. But the government wants the citizens to realise the importance of safekeeping such an important document.

To ensure that Malaysians are responsible and be more wary of their passports, the immigration department decided that a penalty should be in place.

Mustafar Ali told the media in a press conference,

“Before this, those who lost their passports were not given any fine.”

“So, as a step to make the citizens aware, this fine was established so that citizens of Malaysia become more aware and felt responsible to ensure that their passports are kept safely.”

However, this fine hasn’t been executed just yet. It will only come into play once the rule has been approved by the government.

The government still have to go through some things before they can enforce this new rule. There was no mention of the exact amount for the fine.

However, there are still no reports on the methods of payment for this fine. Regardless, all of you should always be careful of your own belongings, especially of important documents such as passports, ICs, driver’s license, etc.
