If you are a dessert lover, you are often overwhelmed with the plethora of choices available in dessert shops and bakeries.
With so many different types of cakes available, (and don’t get us started on the other kinds of desserts!) how do you know which one to choose?
CNN understands the dilemma cake lovers face and that’s probably one of the reasons they published a list of national cakes of the world. So, now you know which one is a classic favourite!
And this year, Malaysia’s favourite pandan cake has made it into the list! You know the pandan chiffon cake, a popular snack that we have been munching on since we were young, and is widely available all over Malaysia.
Soft, spongy, moist and with just the right amount of sweetness, this cake is flavoured with pandan leaves that are commonly used in our Malaysian cooking.
CNN describes our pandan cake by saying, “The pandan leaf flavors everything from sticky rice, chicken and curry to super-sweet, bite-sized kueh. When married to fluffy-yet-moist chiffon cake, it’s a revelation.”
Some of the other famous cakes featured in the list are the Pavlova from New Zealand, Tiramisu from Italy, Lapis Legit from Indonesia, Dorayaki from Japan, and Ma Lai Go from Hong Kong.
We are proud to have one of our cakes featured in the list of 17 best cakes around the world but there’s just one little problem. Apparently when the judges were creating the list, they couldn’t confirm whether the pandan cake originated from Malaysia or from our brother from another mother, Singapore, so they listed it as Malaysia/Singapore.
As Malaysians, we are generally more chill and relaxed than our neighbour but when it comes to food, you can bet that every true Malaysian will go up in arms over this issue. Obviously pandan cake is from us lah, CNN!
And since Singapore was a part of Malaysia before we got sadly separated, they must have learned the technique and recipe from us back then. Am I right or am I right?
Thanks for the feature CNN, just don’t make the same mistake again!
We love you Singapore, but food is life!
