A man has been sentenced to more than 28 years in prison after being found guilty of using a drone to deliver drug packages, including methamphetamine, from Malaysia to Singapore.
According to Kosmo!, Helmie Shahrezza Shahrom was handed a prison sentence of 28 years and 3 months, along with 18 strokes of the cane, by a Singapore court judge.
Three other men involved in the case were previously sentenced to prison terms ranging from 12 to 14 years.
Mohamad Shahrezza Mohammad Zuhri operated the drone, Mohamad Hasri Ab Rahim acted as a lookout, while Mohammad Nazri Jumat attached the drug packages to the unmanned aircraft in Malaysia. Hasri and Nazri were also each sentenced to 10 strokes of the cane.
Helmie, a 34-year-old Singaporean, was the only one to stand trial, as he denied knowing that the drone was being used to transport drugs on the day of his arrest.
Following a trial held on 4 September, he was found guilty of importing illegal drugs into Singapore.
When the sentence was delivered by District Judge Jasvender Kaur, Helmie, dressed in a purple prison uniform, waved to his friends and family seated in the courtroom gallery.
