A man from Washington, DC recently shared on Facebook how a small piece of technology with incredible functions alerted him when his father got into an accident while he was cycling.
Gabe Burdett shared that he and his brother was about to meet up with his dad for some mountain biking in Riverside State Park when he got a text from his dad’s Apple Watch.
The message said that it had “detected a Hard Fall” with a map to his dad’s location, so Gabe and his brother immediately drove there, which wasn’t far from their meeting spot.
However, when they got there, their dad wasn’t anywhere to be found. At that time, Gabe got another message from his dad’s Apple Watch saying that his dad’s location had changed with a map location of Sacred Heart Medical Center.
The second update came just as they were driving by the hospital which enabled them to be with their dad immediately.
“Dad flipped his bike at the bottom of Doomsday, hit his head and was knocked out until sometime during the ambulance ride,” Gabe wrote.
“The watch had called 911 with his location and EMS (emergency medical services) had him scooped up and to the hospital in under 30 mins.”
“Dad is doing great, clear X-Rays and CT scan, but a little sore for sure!” Gabe said.
Gabe then goes on to urge Apple Watch users to turn on the “Hard Fall” detection function as it is great for calling emergency services or your emergency contact when you have a hard fall.
“IF YOU OWN AN APPLE WATCH, set up your HARD FALL detection—it’s not just for when you fall off a roof or a ladder. Had he fallen somewhere on the High Drive trails or another remote area, the location would have clued EMS in on where to find him,” he writes.
Gabe’s post went viral and has since garnered about 525,000 likes and about 460,000 shares at the time of writing.
Many netizens in the comment section said that they didn’t know there was such a setting in the Apple Watch and thanked Gabe for sharing his story, while many others just tagged their friends in his post.
