Recently, all eyes have been on former prime minister Dato’ Seri Najib Tun Razak’s Hari Raya travels to Pulau Langkawi in the midst of the mounting corruption allegations against him.
According to The Star, Malaysia Airlines (MAS) has reportedly come under scrutiny after allegations of them waiving excess baggage charges worth about RM17,000 for Najib and his family recently surfaced. That’s a huge waiver!
The charges were allegedly waived during Najib Razak’s recent trip to Pulau Langkawi with his family, according to screenshots of the airline’s ticketing system that surfaced online. The former prime minister and his family, including his wife Datin Seri Rosmah Mansor, travelled to the island on 16th June. They returned to Kuala Lumpur on 20th June.

The screenshot shows that RM17,071.85 was waived for 535kg of luggage with the name “MOHDNAJIBHjabrazak Dato” listed as “head of pool” for flight MH1450 to Langkawi.
According to Channel NewsAsia, MAS already issued a statement addressing the allegations, saying that the amount of luggage checked in was well within the airline’s limit.

The airline added that passengers who check in as a group have all of their luggage tagged under one name, which is why it looks like excess baggage was checked in under the ticketing system, and said,
“Malaysia Airlines observes a strict policy on excess baggage and can confirm that no waivers were given.”
Malaysians were wary of the former prime minister’s trip to Langkawi when news of his travels surfaced, as many believed this could be a plan to escape the country after getting barred from leaving Malaysia, but police have assured that his visit was just a regular holiday.
