Massive Crowds Of People Flood The Streets Of Wuhan For 2021 New Years Celebration
In case we all forgot, the Wuhan province in China was dubbed as “Covid-19 central” as the virus was first detected there and quickly spread to the rest of the world. The government of China worked tirelessly to eradicate the virus amidst the emergence of second and third waves.
However, the threat of the virus is still very prominent worldwide, with the exception of a few select countries. While the rest of the world had a very subdued New Year’s Eve celebration, this wasn’t the case for the people of Wuhan. CNN reported that large crowds took to the streets at midnight on Friday (1 January) in the central Chinese city of Wuhan, celebrating the arrival of 2021.
As per previous year traditions, hundreds gathered in front of the old Hankow Customs House building and released balloons at the stroke of midnight. Nonetheless, there was still a heavy police presence and strict crowd control at the gathering. Authorities reportedly advised the public to always wear their masks if they wished to stay in the area.
Despite their festivities, a team of WHO experts will be arriving in January 2021 to investigate the origins of the pandemic. Wuhan has been virus-free for the past few months thanks to the government vaccinating small parts of the local community.
