To all you PTPTN defaulters, here’s some good news for you!

Education Minister Maszlee Malik just announced today (May 31) that their plans to lift the travel ban on an approximate 1 million National Higher Education Fund Corporation (PTPTN) defaulters next month is in process. This ban-lift is planned to be executed by June 15 as he has indicated.

“The process to remove defaulters from the blacklist will be executed in phases between May 24 and June 15.”

“Should any of you face trouble at the airport, please contact our officers there,” he told a news conference, according to Malay Mail.

Earlier, he had also mentioned that fresh graduates who owed PTPTN but are only earning RM4,000 or below, do not need to pay the loan back until a proper mechanism is in place.

“We are studying this at the moment and we will take this into consideration as we are currently struggling to clean the dirt caused by the previous administration,” Maszlee said when asked if this could result in accumulated interests.

According to Yahoo News, he added that the Education Ministry will fulfil all the promises made in the Pakatan Harapan election manifesto based on priorities. He did not add further on how they would execute it or how long they would take.

While this may be good news for the borrowers, some netizens are not agreeing with this move and have expressed that loans need to be paid back. Have you paid yours?

Most of them seem to be saying that if borrowers have the money to travel, they should have the money to pay back their loans as well. Do you agree?

What do you think about this move by the Education Ministry? Should PTPTN defaulters be allowed to travel even when they’ve not paid back their loans?
