The Agriculture and Food Security Ministry (KPKM) is considering ending egg subsidies for grade A, B, and C chicken eggs.

Based on Sinar Harian‘s reports, its Minister, Datuk Seri Mohamad Sabu, mentioned that the government is considering cutting the egg subsidy to save RM100 million a month, which could then be used to boost other important areas in the agro-food sector.

Malaysia has spent over RM3 billion on chicken and egg subsidies

Mohamad Sabu shared that they’ve submitted a proposal to the Finance Ministry and the Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Ministry to address the situation.

He also pointed out that since February 2022, the country has spent over RM3 billion on subsidies for chicken and chicken eggs.

After the subsidy for chicken was cut on November 1, 2023, things started to change, and the supply and prices of chicken became more stable as a result.

“Many people belittled our efforts”

Mohamad Sabu mentioned how when the tough and unpopular decision to end the chicken subsidy was made, a lot of people rolled their eyes and dismissed the efforts, claiming that chicken prices would shoot up.

But he reassured everyone that, surprisingly, after the subsidy was cut, chicken prices didn’t skyrocket as they predicted. In fact, the country ended up saving a whopping RM100 million a month instead.
