The Ministry of Urban Wellbeing, Housing and Local Government is currently looking at ways to allow long-term tenants of the People’s Housing Projects (PPR) to own apartment units.

Minister Tan Sri Noh Omar was quoted as saying by The Star that the government can find a way to transfer ownership of PPR units to these long-term tenants, but it could get tricky when it comes to projects built on land belonging to state governments.
There are reportedly two types of PPR units. These units are either funded by the Federal Government but built on state-owned land, or are paid and built on land owned by the Federal Government.
Noh Omar went on to say that the ministry would investigate the real owners of these PPR units before granting permanent ownership status to long-term tenants. He added,
“For rented units, the Federal Government is offering it at RM124 per month while those qualified can directly purchase it for RM35,000 in Peninsular Malaysia or RM42,000 in Sabah and Sarawak.”
“As of December 2017, 450,619 units in total have been completed or in the process of being built while a total of 448,028 units are in the planning process.”

According to the Malay Mail Online, the minister also announced that an additional RM6 million will be used to maintain and fix PPR flats with damaged roofs, clogged drains, and sewage problems, among other issues. Back in May 2017, RM2.6 million was initially allocated for this.
