Malaysians have been hit hard by a wave of scams, with scammers often posing as legitimate organisations and sending text messages with links to entice people to click.

Starting September 1, the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) has implemented a directive to block SMS messages that include prohibited content such as hyperlinks, requests for personal information, and callback numbers.

Scammers are tricking people through SMS services

In a statement, MCMC is working to ensure users are protected from scammers who use SMS services to trick people by pretending to be official or important organisations.

In light of this, MCMC is reminding everyone to keep an eye out for SMS messages containing prohibited content. Messages that include these elements should be considered high-risk and potentially fraudulent.

MCMC is taking extra measures to ensure users’ safety!

MCMC also mentioned that users who receive such SMS messages can file a complaint with them via their website, providing details like the sender’s phone number or short code, recipient’s phone number, reception location, and a screenshot of the received SMS.

MCMC is also reminding everyone to be cautious of similar messages sent through other communication platforms like Google RCS, Apple iMessage, and messaging apps like WhatsApp and Telegram.

“Suspicious and potentially fraudulent messages should be reported directly to the involved platform providers or to MCMC for further action.”
