The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) continues its nationwide effort to promote responsible e-waste disposal through KITAR, a long-term initiative aimed at reducing the environmental impact of discarded digital devices.

Previously introduced in 2015 as the Mobile e-Waste program, the initiative was rebranded as KITAR on 1 November 2022 to reflect a renewed mission and national identity. With the tagline “Peranti Lama, Nafas Baharu” (Old Device, New Life), KITAR encourages Malaysians to recycle their unused or broken ICT and telecommunications devices such as mobile phones, tablets, modems, and chargers safely and responsibly.

To increase access and participation, more than 120 official KITAR drop-off boxes have been placed at selected Pusat Ekonomi Digital (PEDi) locations nationwide. These drop points serve as convenient community-based channels for the public to contribute to a cleaner and safer environment by disposing of eligible small electronic items. The e-waste collected through KITAR is handled by licensed recycling and logistics partners Shan Poornam Metals Sdn Bhd and Flash Malaysia Express Sdn Bhd, who ensure that all devices are processed safely and in compliance with environmental standards.

Proceeds from recyclable materials are returned to the participating PEDi centres and used to support community programs and charitable activities. This community-focused recycling model not only protects the environment from hazardous substances such as lead and mercury but also reinvests value into local initiatives.

Since its inception, KITAR has successfully collected over 4.7 metric tonnes of e-waste from across Malaysia. The initiative has grown from an initial six strategic partners to over 44 stakeholders across public and private sectors, including government agencies, civil society, educational institutions, retailers, and industry partners.

KITAR is also backed by six Designated Universal Service Providers (DUSPs) — CelcomDigi, Maxis, Redtone, Telekom Malaysia, and Webe — who have been instrumental in supporting outreach, infrastructure, and public participation.

The public is encouraged to participate by locating their nearest KITAR drop point at selected PEDi centres, checking the list of accepted items, and contributing their unused or non-functional small electronic devices. No registration is required, and the process is free and open to all Malaysians.
