The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) is looking into a case involving a public university student (IPT) who’s believed to have been selling explicit videos of himself on the X platform (formerly Twitter).

BERNAMA reported that MCMC has announced that they have recorded the statements of the male student after uncovering his activities through monitoring and intelligence gathered based on public complaints.

He has since gained 100,000 followers

Initial investigations by MCMC found that the suspect’s activities started in 2021 when he re-uploaded existing pornographic content shared by other users on the same platform.

The suspect’s modus operandi then shifted to uploading and selling pornographic videos of himself engaging in explicit scenes with women he knew, and gained over 100,000 followers on the platform.

MCMC reported that the student had been using the sale of explicit videos as a source of income, earning up to RM3,000 a month, with each video priced at around RM150.

A phone and SIM card were seized

Following an inspection at a premises in Shah Alam, MCMC said their enforcement team seized a mobile phone unit and a SIM card, believed to belong to the suspect and used to upload the content, to assist with the investigation.

A statement was also taken from the suspect’s friend, a female student from a private higher learning institution (IPTS).

MCMC said that selling explicit videos is an offence under Section 233(2) of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 (CMA 1998). If convicted, the suspect faces a fine of up to RM50,000 or imprisonment for up to 1 year, or both.

MCMC is urging the public to report any activities involving the spreading and selling of explicit content on any social media platform for further enforcement action.
