Despite apologising for their viral video and clarifying that the chicken bones incident involving the homeless man was staged, it appears that the content creator trio may still be in trouble with the law.

Due to the immense backlash and complaints by the general public, the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) has launched an investigation into the video.

Via a press statement, MCMC took to its X page to share further details on why an investigation has been launched. They wrote, “MCMC has initiated an investigation based on public complaints regarding the dissemination of a video showing a group of individuals believed to be influencers, feeding leftover food to a homeless person.”

“MCMC views seriously the act of producing and disseminating content that exploits marginalised groups solely for cheap entertainment, generating spectacle and causing anxiety among the public. Disseminating content that degrades or insults the dignity of individuals is not only unethical, but also leads to the normalisation of inhumane culture in society.

Action can be taken against the content creators

They emphasised that strict action will be taken against any party found guilty, following their investigation based on existing legal provisions.

“The public is reminded not to disseminate or upload any provocative content that may affect public order,”

“Any sharing of offensive, false or threatening content may be subject to action under Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act (AKM) 1998 (Act 588). Upon conviction, offenders can be fined up to RM500,000, imprisoned for a maximum of 2 years, or both,” they explained.

MCMC added that it is committed to ensuring that cyberspace is not misused, in line with its efforts to promote social harmony and uphold the law.
