A 39-year-old man was fined RM1,000 after he was found fishing in a ‘ditch’ at Jalan Kemuyang during the Movement Control Order (MCO). The incident happened around 6pm on 19 January.

According to Sibu District Police Chief ACP Stanley Jonathan Ringgit, the man was arrested for having leisure activities which is an offence under the Prevention and Control of Infectious Diseases Act 1988.

He added that the man was among other individuals who were caught violating the MCO, including those selling durians by the roadside and others travelling in a car with more than three people with no valid reason, reported Utusan Borneo.

The three individuals involved a family – a father (52), mother (50) and son (28) – who were caught during a ‘snapcheck’ on Jalan Wong Soon Kai at 10.20am on 19 January while they were entering the Sibu district.

Stanley added that a total of 40 vehicles and 60 people were checked during the inspection.

All five individuals who were compounded were referred to the Ministry of Health in the Sibu district to settle their RM1,000 compounds within 14 days.

He added that the level of compliance during the MCO in the district is at 98 per cent.

“The MCO monitoring team will take stern action against any individual found to have violated the SOP and will not hesitate to issue the compound without further warning,” he said.

“People are asked to adhere to the prescribed SOP as well as continue to self-discipline with self-control to break the chain of infection Covid-19,” he added.
