The Malaysian Employers Federation (MEF) believes that employers should not have to openly state their salary schemes. MEF President, Datuk Dr Syed Hussain Syed Husman shared that this is because salaries are classified as confidential and should not be displayed to the public.
According to a report by Buletin TV3, this comes after Muar MP Syed Saddiq proposed that the government enact the Salary Advertisement Act, so that employers are required to advertise salary scales for the jobs their are offering.
“It is therefore feared that the proposal to enact a law requiring employers to display the salary range in job advertisements will be seen as unfriendly to investors.”
“In addition, it will also make it difficult for the country to reach the top 12 in world competitiveness in the next 10 years,” Datuk Dr Syed Hussain said.
Malaysians are outraged at his statement
They believe that, by allowing employers to hide their salary schemes, it would make it easier for them to trick job applicants into receiving lower salaries.
“Just say you want to underpay people.”
“There’s no need to give face to employers. They want to hide (salary ranges) because they want to pay lower salaries. If you don’t have to money to pay salaries, don’t do business. Employees are constantly oppressed.”
“It is because employers do not want to display salary ranges that many of them give out lower salaries than what they’re supposed to, and take advantage of people who desperately need the work, and they end up willing to demand low salaries. Damn employers and HR departments who are like this.”
“Don’t make salary ranges confidential. Let people choose their jobs.”
