Every year, Malaysians get ready to fly the Jalur Gemilang and celebrate Hari Kebangsaan (Merdeka Day) on 31 August. Then, just a few weeks later, we celebrate Hari Malaysia (Malaysia Day) on 16 September.

But what’s the difference between the two? If you’ve ever wondered why Malaysia has two major national celebrations so close together, here’s a quick history lesson.

What happened on 31 August 1957?

On 31 August 1957, the Federation of Malaya achieved independence from British rule.  The historic proclamation took place at Stadium Merdeka in Kuala Lumpur at 9.30 AM, with approximately 20,000 people in attendance. According to the Department of Information Malaysia’s Semarak Malaysia Edisi 2020, then Prime Minister Tunku Abdul Rahman Putra Al-Haj famously led the crowd in shouting “Merdeka!” seven times

This is what Hari Kebangsaan, or Merdeka Day, commemorates: the independence of the Federation of Malaya.

But there’s one important detail: Malaysia didn’t exist yet.

So what happened on 16 September 1963?

Six years later, another major milestone took place.

According to Sayangi Malaysiaku, on 16 September 1963, Tunku Abdul Rahman proclaimed the formation of Malaysia at Stadium Merdeka.

The new federation consisted of the Federation of Malaya, Sabah, Sarawak and Singapore.

So, simply put:

  • 31 August 1957 = Malaya became independent.
  • 16 September 1963 = Malaysia was formed.

But what about Sabah and Sarawak?

This is where things get a little more interesting.

Sabah and Sarawak followed their own paths before joining Malaysia.

According to Sayangi Malaysiaku, Sarawak achieved independence on 22 July 1963, while Sabah, then known as North Borneo, achieved independence on 31 August 1963. Both then became part of Malaysia on 16 September.

Meanwhile, Singapore was also part of Malaysia when the federation was formed, before separating and becoming an independent country on 9 August 1965.

So why do we celebrate both?

Because they commemorate two different events.

  • 31 August (Merdeka Day): The independence of the Federation of Malaya in 1957.
  • 16 September (Malaysia Day): The formation of Malaysia in 1963.

Both are recognised as federal public holidays today, as shown under Public Holidays & School Holidays.

So, we’re not exactly celebrating the same ‘birthday’ twice.

We’re remembering two milestones that shaped the country we know today: one marking Malaya’s independence, and the other marking the formation of Malaysia.

And honestly, two reasons to fly the Jalur Gemilang isn’t such a bad thing.
