Remember back in primary school when we had to draw our ideas of “Wawasan 2020” for art class? While some of us drew Malaysians in space, others drew Kuala Lumpur as a utopia with flying cars. Now, it looks like Malaysia is actually trying to make flying cars a reality!

Just yesterday (26th February), Minister of Entrepreneur Development Datuk Seri Mohd Redzuan Md Yusof stated that the prototype for a Malaysian-made flying car would be made public sometime this year (2019).

He was quoted by the New Straits Times as saying,

“This year is a realistic target because we have the technology already. It is all about the speed of implementation. The prototype would cost slightly over RM1 million to build.”

“We are providing the catalyst and ecosystem to stimulate the people to think beyond what we are capable of doing today.”

According to Datuk Seri Redzuan, the flying car, made entirely using local technology, can fly at low altitudes at a reasonable speed, adding that it will make use of Malaysia’s capabilities in a multitude of sectors the like aerospace, drone, unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV), and automotive sectors. This is reportedly part of the government’s aim to make Malaysia a producing nation.

However, he clarified that this project is separate from the third national car project that was proposed by Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad, according to The Sun Daily.
