This is definitely one the best policies that can be implemented in schools!

Not too long ago, the Sarawak St John’s Ambulance has suggested the Ministry of Education to include cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) as a compulsory subject in schools and institutions of higher education, and the minister has responded to the suggestion, as reported by The Star.

“The proposal is good but we will have to see how we can include CPR into the existing education system. We’ll have to see how best we can introduce CPR without interrupting the present academic structure or giving the students additional work,” Deputy Education Minister Datuk Chong Sin Woon said.

He added that the ministry always welcomes new ideas to enhance the country’s education system.

This vital skill is extremely important especially to those who stay in remote areas such as mountainous areas where it would take a longer time for emergency response teams to access.

In case you aren’t familiar with CPR, this emergency procedure involves chest compressions and artificial ventilation. The compression aids in blood circulation and delivers oxygen to the brain.

This is crucial as brain cells typically begin to die four to six minutes after the blood flow has been cut off. The compression is usually done until the medic team arrives at the scene and takes over.

This proposal received positive reactions from members of the public as well as netizens.

“This is a brilliant idea and it should’ve been implemented in all schools a long time ago. If there’s really no way to squeeze this subject into students’ timetables, classes such as physical education can be shortened to allow students to learn about CPR,” a netizen said.

“If the minister is serious about the proposal, it should be implemented throughout the year, and not just twice a year. Plus, please ensure students are taught by trained personnel as we don’t want the students to learn the wrong technique,” another concerned netizen commented.

This is definitely a good move by the Ministry of Education. What’s your take on this guys?
