With all the heavy downpour recently, you would have thought that the monsoon season in Malaysia has already started but it appears that the annual Northeast monsoon is only expected to begin on Monday, November 13.
According to a recent statement published by the Malaysian Meteorological Department (MMD) on their Facebook page, the Northeast monsoon will start soon – this coming Monday in fact! This is expected to continue until March 2018.
They predict that there will be about four to five episodes of torrential downpour taking place this year. Gotta be careful, everyone!
“Heavy rain is expected in Kelantan, Terengganu, Pahang and Johor in November and December 2017. In December 2017 and January 2018, the heavy rain is more focused on west Sarawak, north and east Sabah,” the statement continued. Time to take out those big umbrellas, folks!
In addition, the statement said, “During the northeast monsoon, continuous rainfall up to three days could cause floods in low-lying and flood-prone areas. If the heavy rains fall at the same time as the high tide, the risk of floods occurring is higher.”
As there have been many incidents of flash floods happening all over Malaysia recently, MMD also cautions everyone to be more alert and make the necessary preparations.
They added, “The public is advised to be prepared for heavy rains and take note of the weather alerts released by the department through its website www.met.gov.my, the myCuaca smartphone application, on Facebook (malaysiamet), Twitter (@malaysianmet), SMS 15888 and MMD Hotline 1 300 22 1MET (1638).”
Brace yourselves for the monsoon and stay safe!
