La Nina to hit Malaysia until the end of the year

Head of Department, Department of Environmental Science and Technology, Faculty of Forestry and Environment, Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM), Dr Zulfa Hanan Ashaari, reminded the public to always be aware of official warnings issued by the Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) to allow them to make early preperations.

This includes inspecting the house to ensure that the roof and gutters are not leaking or clogged so that rainwater can flow smoothly.

For areas that are often at risk of flooding, he said, residents should store important documents and electrical equipment in high places. In addition, the public is also encouraged to prepare emergency bags containing food, water, medicine, flashlights and power banks.

At such time, hygiene is also important to prevent water borne diseases and mosquitoes.

Malaysians advised to brace themselves for harsher weather

Meanwhile, Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) Hydrology and Flood Modelling Expert, Professor Dr Mohd Ekhwan Toriman said that international climate models clearly show that the La Nina phenomenon will occur at the end of this year and will last until early next year.

“If this happens, there is a possibility that La Nina will occur for a short period at the end of the year and early next year. It will affect the frequency and magnitude of rainfall patterns as it occurs in conjunction with the eastern monsoon.”

Professor Dr Mohd Ekhwan also reminded the public to always be alert of the current situation updated by MetMalaysia to brace themselves for the weather, reported Berita Harian.

“Make sure all important documents are kept in a safe place, medicines are available and avoid outdoor activities that are exposed to the threat of flooding.”
