The Parliament session for the Third Term of the 2nd Meeting of the 15th Parliament officially started today (June 24) and will last until July 18. With the parliament session back, we’re sure all the MPs have LOTS to discuss.

Former Ministry of Transport, Dato Seri Dr. Wee Ka Siong shared what he had in mind today, which he would discuss in the Parliament.

Bring back GST

In case you missed it, the Goods and Services Tax, which was previously set at 6% was abolished in 2018 before it was replaced with the current Sales and Services Tax (SST). GST was introduced by jailed former PM, Najib Razak which was implemented in 2015.

With GST gone and SST still in play, why would Wee want it back?

“More reasonable, less burdensome”

In his FB post this morning (June 24), Wee shared his take on bringing back GST, which he believed was a better, reasonable idea for Malaysians.

And here’s possibly good news (if GST ever made its way back). Wee suggested an improved mechanism to the GST.

“Previously, Malaysians were charged a 6% of GST. This time, they could consider a lower GST rate, from 6% to 4%, which is seen as more reasonable and less burdensome to consumers and taxpayers.”

Other than GST, Wee also shared some other issues that he would like to bring up when it was his turn to speak, such as increasing the security at specific places and the state of the Malaysian Rainforest.

It’s clear that Wee has done his homework before attending the Parliament. What do you think of his take on the lesser GST rate?
