Most M’sians Don’t Have SOCSO Coverage, Here’s How to Protect Yourself
Most people know about EPF, but do they know about Socso?
Socso/Perkeso functions as an organisation that collects contribution from employers and employees as well as give out payments of benefits to workers and their dependents if tragedy falls upon them. It is crucial that all workers are protected under Socso.
However, it was revealed that more than half of the 14 million workers in the country are not insured by the Social Security Organisation (Socso).
To deal with this issue, the organisation will start to find employers who do not register their staff with Socso soon.
Socso CEO Datuk Seri Mohamad Azman Aziz said, as quoted by Malay Mail,
“I advise those who are working on a contract, but your employers haven’t contributed to your Socso fund to go to the nearest Socso officer and make a complaint. Bring along documents like your IC (identification card) and your payslip.”
He also added that most employers might misunderstand that Socso is for full-time staff only. However, part-timers and contract staff are also eligible for Socso. He said,
“Workers, on the other hand, don’t know their rights which are protected by the law the day they take that first step into work.”
He added that foreign workers are also eligible for protection, with almost 2 million of them expected to register this year.
Those who fail to register their staff with Socso could face a 2-year jail term or a fine not more than RM10,000 or both.
So to all workers out there, please check whether you are registered and your monthly contributions go towards Socso. If not, the first step is to remind your employers to do so. If they refuse, then please visit the nearest office to make a report on the matter.
