Whenever a festive season comes around, we are often accustomed to playing with firecrackers and fireworks even though it is illegal.

However, Local Government Development Minister Nga Kor Ming recently announced that the federal government has agreed to legalise firecrackers and fireworks which has drawn mixed reactions.

Recently, a Twitter user took to the app to condemn the minister’s announcement of the legalisation of fireworks by sharing a video of a toddler who had suffered from burns after an accident with a firework.

In the video shared by the netizen, a toddler could be seen holding up a firework from the balcony of their house. The toddler was supported by an adult which is presumed to be her parent.

However, things eventually went wrong after the firework had burned too close to the toddler. The video then ended with the parent pulling their toddler away from the firework.

The post by the user reads, “When you have a PH government and the Local Government Development Minister wants to legalise firecrackers for the sake of the government’s pockets. This is the consequence of making illegal things halal. Have you finished studying it yet? I’m sure that the Fire & Rescue Department and the police would not support this move.”

Responsibility of the parents

The post by the Twitter user has since gone viral and captured the attention of netizens who shared their thoughts on the matter. Plenty of users slammed the user for blaming the government for the child’s injuries when it should technically be the fault of the parents.

“I’m an adult and even I don’t dare to hold the firework just like that. Why would you let your child hold it? And then blame the government.”

Suddenly blaming the government. It should the fault of the parents of the child. Don’t tell me that the government have to educate against stupid things like this,” commented a user.

Another netizen said, “The fault lies on the parents on letting their toddler play with things like these.”

Who is to blame? Is it right to blame the government for the legalisation of fireworks when it perhaps should be responsibility of parents to keep their children out of danger?
