It has become a tradition for friends and family members to visit newborn babies. Unfortunately, due to their weak immune system, it’s relatively easy for babies to contract diseases from adults, which was what happened to this poor baby.
According to a Facebook post, a mother named Ummi safely delivered her third baby on 20 July 2018. Everything was fine and the baby named Affan was sent to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU).

Affan was discharged on 24 July but six days later, the mother noticed some blisters on the baby’s face. “There were about three of them (blisters) and there were yellowish pus in the blisters,” Ummi wrote.
Feeling uneasy, the mother brought the baby to see a doctor but was told that the blisters weren’t life-threatening. However, the doctor did refer them to KPJ Seremban hospital due to jaundice.
“Affan was warded (at KPJ Seremban). That night, a kind doctor named Dr Syed Jefrizal called Ummi and said that Affan had contracted a disease called Impetigo.”

Ummi then met up with the doctor the next day where she was informed about the disease. Apparently, Impetigo is a skin disease that infants or kids can easily contract from those who are infected. It may not be dangerous but it’s highly contagious.
The doctor then asked the mother if anyone had visited Affan before this and from there, the doctor speculated that one of the visitors may have been the source of the infection. The baby was initially given a cream to be applied on the blisters but things took a turn for the worse.
The skin condition had spread to Affan’s forehead, ears and nose where there was white discharge emerging from these areas. Ummi had to bring the baby back to KPJ where Affan was administered antibiotics.

Four days later, Affan’s skin started to peel by itself and a dermatologist was called in to administer another antibiotic as the infant was diagnosed with scalded skin syndrome.

It took a few days for the dried skin to completely peel off and Affan’s mood could be seen improving as well. Luckily, the disease didn’t leave any permanent scars on the baby’s face. Phewww…

The mother has since advised all parents out there that it’s okay to be overprotective when it comes to newborn babies because it is actually better if no one comes to visit as this will reduce the risk of getting an infection.
We’re glad that Affan has recovered from the skin disease and hopefully, all parents can learn a lesson from this incident. Keep smiling, Affan! 🙂
