Whenever raya is coming up, local fashion brands often find ways to innovate and come up with fresh ideas on how to design their outfits creatively.

However, this can sometimes go the wrong way, especially when you try to fuse traditional outfits with modern fashion and themes.

Recently, a fashion show for a local brand went viral for all the wrong reasons.

In various pictures and videos which have since gone viral on social media, men and women were wearing modernised versions of baju melayu as they strutted around the streets of Bukit Bintang.

The marketing stunt is reported to be for the Raya collection of a local brand, and featured modernised baju melayus in the colour of the rainbow.

Apart from posing and walking around the streets of Bukit Bintang, the models were spotted walking on the iconic crossroads of Bukit Bintang.

What is this?

The videos and images of the models have gone viral on Twitter as netizens took to the comments section to slam the brand for their modernised baju melayus.

Some pointed out how it is disrespectful of a woman to wear a baju melayu whilst showing her bare legs. Others criticised the brand for what they claimed to be trying to fuse a LGBTQ agenda with traditional Malay outfits.

“Not related to traditional baju melayu at all. Don’t ruin the baju melayu.”

“The audacity after ruining a traditional attire,” said a user.

Meanwhile, users condemned the brand and its models for taking up the public crossroad and causing an inconvenience to others.

“Should have done somewhere else. Extremely dangerous for the models and the public crossing the road.”

Another commented, “They should be fined and shamed for obstructing the road.”
