We cannot stress further the importance of proper food handling and hygiene. Serving expired food is not only unhygienic but also puts the health of consumers at risk.
Last year, Zus Coffee went viral for serving a mouldy cake to its customer, and this time, history has repeated itself. Just recently, a Malaysian shared her horrible experience via her Facebook post and revealed what happened during her visit to one of the outlets of Zus Coffee in Malaysia.
Based on her receipt, she ordered 2 drinks and 2 pastries on January 28 which cost her nearly RM40. One of the pastries, Firecracker Chicken Sausage Roll cost her RM10.28 and had a “mouldy surprise”. Her son had eaten part of the sausage roll, only to find the meat has become mouldy, which obviously made her unhappy.
As she was still at the shop, she immediately approached one of the staff and inform them about the situation. Without wasting time, the staff immediately removed the entire tray of sausage rolls from the display and discarded the rotten pastry.
Did Zus compensate the customer?
While she was not refunded for the rotten pastry, the family did get compensation in the form of a voucher.
“It was a buy 1 free 1 voucher,” the husband said.
The woman assured netizens that she was not trying to seek for attention, but was merely practising her right as a consumer, as well as spreading awareness about food hygiene and preparation.
She also reminded food operators out there not to take this matter lightly.
“You guys should be alert on these matters. It’s dangerous, especially to those with sensitive stomach,” she said.
At the time of writing (February 3), Zus Coffee has yet to respond to the matter.

The matter has also circulated on Twitter, and some Malaysians who used to patronise Zus Coffee shared their similar experience at different outlets.
“This isn’t Zus’s first time serving mouldy food, and their audacity to just replace the food. Customers could get serious food poisoning.”
“I ordered a drink from them but the milk they used was spoilt. I couldn’t complain directly as that was a delivery order. It’s cheaper compared to other brands but the quality is not there. Since then, I stop patronising them.”

If consumed, mouldy food may pose a serious threat to the consumer’s health. Regardless, we hope that this will serve as a reminder to all food operators out there to be more alert when it comes to serving food to customers.
